Region 5 (R5) Expanded Learning Partnerships is one of 16 STEAM HUBs funded by the CA Department of Education, Expanded Learning Division. Our charge is to increase the number of quality STEAM activities students experience during out of school time. After surveying expanded learning program staff about training needs, a diverse group of collaborators met to determine the best way to offer deep and meaningful professional development to those on the front line working directly with youth.
Communities of Practice

Despite COVID-19, Region 5 will host another year of Communities of Practice (COPs) devoted to the development of co-created hands-on curricula. Content level experts in Math, Science, English Language Arts and English Language Development will help lead sessions on an integrated approach to STEAM lesson design, built on the NGSS 5E model and 21st Century skill development.
Some of the most innovative and creative minds in our region representing The Walt Disney Family Museum, RAFT, UC Cooperative Extension, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Granite Construction, Fused Learning and the Monterey County Office of Education (to name a few) serve as thought partners and mentors to participating programs in between each scheduled COP.
